About

Born in India, raised in Virginia, and now based in Los Angeles, Ngawang Samphel is a Tibetan multifaceted composer, producer, and sound designer. He is self-taught in production, classical piano, composition, theory and more. He credits watching the 1940 version of Fantasia during his childhood as the original spark of inspiration to find out what makes music so good. Ngawang’s father saw his son fascinated by a piano at a family friend’s house so he gifted his son a teaching keyboard with light-up keys—this sealed Ngawang’s fate in music.

In his previous professional life, Ngawang was an accountant for five years while balancing his passion to create music. He played synth for a band called Lightwaves where they performed at notable D.C. venues such as U Street Music Hall and The Howard Theater. He simultaneously had a music project with his brother Tenzin called Indiginis where they co-produced tracks and official remixes, as well as performed DJ sets at venues such as Flash in D.C. and Webster Hall in New York.

After a cross-country move from D.C. to L.A. to pursue his dream, Ngawang graciously received the opportunity to assist Ludwig Göransson on his projects—this would not happen without the mentorship from Netflix Music Executive Charlene Huang and composer Nathan Matthew David thanks to a contest for AAPI creators by Ermantourage.
